What is the difference between Dhoni's captaincy and Kohli's captaincy?

This question was originally answered on Quora. Answer below by quora user Achyut Telang.
Dhoni
  • Generally more defensive, especially in Tests.
  • He likes to play with the same combination.
  • Prefers playing an allrounder to maintain the balance of the side.
  • Follows his theories like left arm spinners against right handed batsmen but takes decisions by gut feeling in crucial situations, generally successfully.
Kohli
  • He is more aggressive.
  • Willing to try different things.
  • Looks to attack and pick up 20 wickets to win a Test and hence prefers playing 5 genuine bowlers.
  • Plays to win. Given a choice between a draw (safety) and winning (risky), he will still go for the win at the risk of losing.
One more major difference is their expressiveness and reactions. By looking at Kohli you can know the exact situation of match without looking at the scoreboard.
As a player you would be afraid to make mistakes under Kohli. Under Dhoni, a player knows that the captain places his trust in him but will not say anything on the field if he fails. Both have their pros and cons.
